Dangerous Animals, The Phoenician Scheme, and Moon Knight S1
published: Sat 07 June 2025Dangerous Animals (2025) is a fairly-standard slasher horror. I didn't notice anything particularly noteworthy about the characters, the cinematography, or the plot. I guess Jordan Peele has just spoiled me for horror films? 4/7; mediocre, but I laughed when Matthew pointed out how often the villain gets knocked out.
The Phoenician Scheme (2025) is a Wes Anderson film. If you've seen a Wes Anderson film, you know roughly what to expect: interesting/humorous shot composition, characters who seem to consider their wacky situations unremarkable, deliberately flat but overly-verbose dialog, and striking color choices. I also didn't enjoy this one as much as previous Anderson films, but it's still better than most of the crap Hollywood puts out. 5/7; a cut above the rest, but needs a particular audience.
Moon Knight (S1; 2022) is either the best or second-best Disney-Marvel long-movie (they're not TV shows). Second-best only because Loki S1 exists. I watched through most of Moon Knight for the third time with Matthew this time and I still enjoy it. The action continues to be the worst part of Disney-Marvel stuff, but fortunately the characters and color choices are interesting enough to make up for it here. The DID is treated with reasonable tact from what I understand, and the relationship between Marc/Steven and Khonshu is always amusing (in a dark way). 5/7; if you like Disney-Marvel's brand of action-drama, then this is in the top tier. If you don't like that genre, you probably still won't like this.
